Save the date - Conference: Recruiting skilled workers for the social and ecological transformation in the energy crisis – challenges and possible paths for Thuringia

Skills shortages are now a hot topic. According to the Federal Agency for Vocational Education and Training (BiBB), 68,900 training places in Germany remained unfilled in 2022 – a record number for the third year in a row. In Thuringia, the number of jobs on offer exceeds demand: according to the autumn survey conducted by the Thuringian Chambers of Industry and Commerce, every second company in Thuringia has vacancies. This situation is particularly serious in view of the socio-ecological transformation processes, such as the energy transition, which are affecting industries such as the automotive industry in particular. Added to this is a fundamental energy and materials crisis, which is placing an additional burden on Thuringian companies.

Against this backdrop, the conference will address the following questions: What strategies are available for recruiting skilled workers and how can these be applied in the Thuringian context? How can these be integrated into everyday business practice? How can the potential of existing staff be exploited through strategic further training? And finally: How can local people without jobs and international workers be integrated into the labor market in order to close skills gaps?

The event combines scientific expertise with concrete practical experience and aims to facilitate a practice-oriented exchange on topics such as resource-efficient options for strategy development and methods for recruiting skilled workers. The event also aims to bring together business stakeholders with key social actors from public institutions, politics, trade unions, associations, and educational institutions.

In addition to exchanging experiences, the aim is to develop concrete solutions that can be continued after the event with support from ongoing research projects: Would you like to explore these issues in more depth for your company? Then become a practice partner and benefit from one of our pilot projects. The conference takes a science-meets-practice approach, i.e., it aims to make scientific expertise accessible to stakeholders from business and politics, link it to practical expertise, and translate it into a practice- and solution-oriented debate. Keynote speeches from academia and practice will be followed by parallel thematic workshops with practitioners on topics such as targeted continuing education approaches, hydrogen as a source of hope, and intercultural skills. The event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring prominent speakers.
