ThEEN meetup in the »Bioenergy Village« Schlöben

How does an entire community supply itself with heat in a climate-friendly way? ThEEN visited Schlöben to find out.

On April 30, 2025, the ThEEN meetup took place in the »Bioenergy Village« Schlöben. There, ThEEN members and interested parties were given an insight into the municipality's energy concept by Mr. Perschke, mayor of the municipality and chairman of Bioenergiedorf Schlöben e.G. Impressive: the biogas plant, in combination with a wood chip plant, supplies several villages with local heating. It is clear that sustainability is practiced in many ways in the municipality.

The concept of the bioenergy village was born from the basic idea of jointly developing a central heating supply from renewable energy sources (biomass) for the municipality of Schlöben and its residents. To this end, 420 cows in Mennewitz provide the necessary raw material, namely manure and slurry, to produce biogas in the biogas plant. The plant was completed by three combined heat and power units for electricity and heat generation, a wood chip heating system, and the local heating network.

During the tour, we walked from the source of the energy supply, the cowshed, to the heat supply facilities and the biogas pipeline in the community. Some members drew inspiration from the event for their upcoming municipal heating plans. We had a wonderful morning and are already looking forward to the next ThEEN meetup!
